I had a 81 Delta 88, a very good car. That should be non CCC and may not even have the air pump. Is it the TH2004R overdrive trans? I assume fully loaded with plush seats. Welcome.

Yes very plush ! No air pump , but did have a cat . i was told that the trans is a Turbo 250 . It is my daily driver in VIctoria . it is a good car , is under valued for what it can do and how nice it is to drive . Od has turned over . The pic is the drivers seat . My dad purchased this car new in Saskatoon . This car has been to Melville !

Our 81 also had the TH250C trans, the "C" stands for lock up converter. Canadian cars use a vacuum switch to control converter lock up, unlike a American cars which use the ECM. That looks in between our 81 and the usual super pillow top seats. Our 81 had the plainest, minimal padding, non split bench seat. A very rare option, most had the super pillow top split bench seats. Still had air, tilt and cruise. My 70 Cutlass is the only Olds not equipped with at least those options.

Is vin code Y , intake is 17 . What would be some upgrade ideas ? its not a hot rod and only has to be reliable . Car does 130 k on hi way easy , but maybe geared to hi for city driving , i drive it in 2 nd gear in the city. I see from other posts a diff gear change to 3.73 ? might help in city driving . Not sure what gears i have now , but its not posi and do not need posi . How would a gear diff change the hi way speed ? only need to do legal speed limit !

What size tires? What speeds do you drive on the Highway? You probably have a 2.41 gear ratio, around 1750 RPM at 60 mph. With a 215/75R15 or 205/75R15 tire with 3.08 would 2300 and 2250 RPM at 60 mph.The 3.73 is more for a TH2004R overdrive transmission. Yes, the same intake as all the big cars I have seen, it is fine, just heavy. The nylon coated cam gear isn't a bad thing to change as the nylon can flake off into your oil pump pickup. The factory exhaust is awful. Caps are available for the extra pipe and get true 2.25" duals with dual modern catalytic converters, if necessary,
it will add noticeable performance. Use large body Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers and it will barely be louder than stock inside.

Tire size is 215 75 r 15 , but have been looking at all tire size options . Hi way speed , i only drive the speed limit not more . Do not have a tack so no idea of RPM but sounds low even at 120 k.

Nylon coated cam gear , is that the timing chain cam gear ? I just had the water pump and timing chain and both crank and cam gear changed .
So the nylon flakes from the cam gear can plug the oil pump pick up screen !

Yeah, I would go 3.08, your current series 2 carrier will fit any 3.08 gears, that will give 2250 at 60 mph. Yes, all the factory cam gears had the teeth coated in nylon. All mine were intact, not even cracked except my 450,000 km 307, skipped but never pulled the pan or cover, I had another 307 to swap in. The gears and dual exhaust will wake it up a lot.

Any idea what cars had the 3.08 gears ? How would i know i have found 3.08 gears? is it stamped somewhere ? The rear diff gears i have now , would the numbers be stamped on the outside somewhere ?

The nylon teeth on the cam gear, has this already been talked about some where on this forum ? If not it should be a new thread .

There should be,a thread on the nylon cam gear. Check for tag in the diff or stamps on the axle tubes. The only way to know for sure is count teeth on the ring and pinion to find out the ratio. A good heavy duty upgrade that is a direct swap is a 8.5" from a late 80's to early 90's Chevy Caprice. I believe the 3.08 was a common option on the Police cars. You can get used or new 3.08 7.5" gears that will bolt onto your current carrier. Astro Van's or S10's are good sources for the 3.08 gear ratio. I believe those years were the 7.5" rear ends, I think only wagons and only later years or Police car sedans got the 8.5" rear ends.
